These People Wasted Their Time in College

It is known that a person who goes so college, usually does so to better the world or you go to college to better themselves in some way. Unfortunately, there are people in this world who never made it that far, and only use their degree to resort to the following logical fallacy;

“I went to college, did you? No? You’re wrong then.”

This logical fallacy is known as what’s called an ”Appeal to Authority in cases in which the individual has a degree related to the subject at hand.

[An appeal to authority is] “Insisting that a claim is true simply because a valid authority or expert on the issue said it was true, without any other supporting evidence offered.”

-Bo Bennett, PhD

In cases where someone claims expertise on a matter that has nothing to do with their occupational field, degree, or experience, this is called, ”appeal to false/unqualified authority”.

“Appeal to unqualified authority“ [is] an informal fallacy that occurs when an argument cites the testimony of an unqualified authority in support of a conclusion.”

-PHIL 102: Critical Thinking (P. J. Huxley)

After going to college, they should have learned the knowledge to teach others why they are wrong or right. If they can’t tell people why they are wrong or right, or at least tell themselves the same, it is quite possible that these argumentative naysayers squandered precious learning time spent “earning” their degree.

A common argument of someone who has potentially squandered their degree in simpler terms, provided by this screenshot from one of my own personal arguments.

Statistics class, is a non-essential class. You can fail it and still get your degree In many instances. Taking the class itself is one thing, passing it with flying colors is another.

Also worth noting, there are still people in this world who either did not retain their information after college, or took part in other unsavory, immoral and indecent acts to obtain her/his degree. The argument that: “Well I went to college” is a fallacy of weak induction that should be avoided.

An instructor can teach a person as much as they are willing and able to learn. All a person really needs to learn is an open mind and reading, hearing or for some; Braille-comprehension.

You, the reader, may be able to take this book 📖 read it, and study it, over and over again. If you discuss it with others as need be, and make inquiries about things you do not understand using forums and otherwise, you can be just as well informed about this book as any college graduate. It simply takes time, interest, discipline, and comprehension.

Teaching is a part of learning. Some may call it a burden, but if so, it’s a burden necessary with knowledge.

Set aside the social aspect of teaching and confrontations with the willfully ignorant; If a person is unable teach what they have learned, then they have not learned it.

If a person can only use their degree to belittle the less fortunate, they did not earn their degree. Do not be one of those who wasted their education belittling others, turning the curious into tools used to sanctify the ego of the self righteous and boastfully illogical. These individuals have no respect for their degree, and have unfortunately wasted their education.
